Overview

New laws and expectations for organizing and using data are leading to sweeping reforms across government agencies, with major implications for future data uses in homeland security, defense, and national security. With changes from the Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking Act of 2018 (Evidence Act) and the recently published Federal Data Strategy (FDS) 2021 Action Plan, the Department of Homeland Security established Chief Data Officer positions throughout the Department and coordinated activities through a departmental Data Governance Board. Taken together, recent reforms are improving processes to make government data more accessible and useful for decision-making, and the Federal Data Strategy provides guidance on how agencies should manage and use federal data. During this virtual event hosted by the Data Coalition and DLT Solutions, in partnership with Informatica, participants heard from data professionals responsible for implementing these changes in homeland security — from promoting data accessibility and responsible data use, to what lessons they have learned and what they see as the future of evidence-based decision making in government.
